Field Notes

A smaller reading list

· 2 minute read

A reading list is useful when it helps a book find its moment. It becomes less useful when every interesting title turns into another obligation.

Keep a short shelf

Choose a few things for now: something to learn from, something to enjoy, and something that invites a different point of view. The rest can stay on a longer list without demanding immediate attention.

Remember the idea, not the tally

After a chapter, write down one thought that stayed with you. A question, an image, or a sentence in your own words can be more valuable than a page full of copied passages.

Reading slowly is still reading. Leaving a book unfinished can also make room for the right one.
